Dropped Object Risk Assessment

During any lift in a facility, there is a possibility that the lifted object is dropped resulting in equipment damage, structural damage or a release of hydrocarbons. For an offshore unit the dropped object study considers topside, subsea equipment and structures.

The study can highlight several key design and operability findings such as:

  • the risk contribution from the lifting activity,
  • the lifting restriction map indicating what sort of object can be lifted over the different region of the facility or sea,
  • the specified need for dropped object protection, and
  • calculation of safe distance from an installation to where a lifting operation can take place.
