Hazard Assessment

In project following a risk-based design, the first stage is the hazard assessment.

The objectives are to pinpoint weaknesses in the design and operation of the project, to identify Major Accident Events (MAE) in terms of Safety, Environment, Operation and Reputation, to confirm the existing or intended risk reduction measures and to identify necessary changes and recommendations. 

Usually carried out in a qualitative or semi-quantitative manner, the different techniques used at the Hazard assessment stage provide the project partners with information to aid in making decisions for improving safety and managing the risks of the project.

  • Hazard Identification study (HAZID):
    The HAZID is a systematic review of a process or facility using guidewords to identify all hazards having the potential to cause a major accident event at the facility. The study also highlights the prevention and mitigation barriers in place to avoid the identified major accident events.

  • Hazard & Operability study (HAZOP):
    The HAZard and OPerability study is a structured methodology to study the possible parameter deviations from the way in which a process is expected to work during normal operating conditions, normal and emergency shutdown and to identify hazards and major operational problems with these deviations.

  • Job Safety Analysis (JSA):
    JSA is a technique that focuses on job tasks as a way to identify hazards and make sure they are properly handled. It focuses on the relationship between the worker, the task, the tools, and the work environment.

  • Simultaneous Operation Study (SIMOPS):
    SIMOPS is a structured methodology using guidewords to identify hazards when two or more potentially conflicting activities or process operations are being coordinated at the same location at the same time.
